STRUCTURED SYSTEMS DEVELOPMENT: ANALYSIS, DESIGN, IMPLEMENTATION: INTERNATIONAL STUDENT EDITION

POWERS, MICHAEL J. - Personal Name; CHENEY, PAUL H. - Personal Name; CROW, GALEN - Personal Name;

Systems analysis and design is a challenge to teach because it is not meant to be taught in a classroom environment. It is practiced in the real worlds of busi- ness and government and should be taught in those environments. Many in- structors give their students practical experience on a project team actually designing a small real world system. It may be an inventory control system for be essential to the student in an information systems curriculum. Before this can take place effectively the students must have some know. edge befocerning the systems development life cycle and the activities and tak indsolved in designing and implementing a computer information system. k involved itur opinion provides this basic information. The content of this text includes all of the relevant topics necessary for the students to proceed on the owlude as a team to that real world first experience of developing a small sy tem. In an effort to accomplish this we have done the following.

■We have included entire chapters on the following topics:
■managing the development process
■data analysis techniques
■process analysis techniques
■automating the development process
■information gathering
■communication techniques and strategies
■human/machine interface design
■software design strategies
■control and reliability design
■testing strategies and techniques
■rapid development techniques

■ The book covers all of the tools and techniques used in the development of computer information systems including an introduction to both process analysis and data analysis techniques.
■ Structured systems analysis and design techniques are employed through- out the text.
■The text is skills oriented. We emphasize the role of the systems designer and concentrate on the skills that are necessary in each phase of the sys- tems development life cycle.
■The text is designed so that BriefCASE, a student CASE tool, which in- cludes a data dictionary, word processor, report and form design pro- gram, screen design program, and a graphics design program may be inte- grated with the text.
■Part 7 of the text illustrates each of the tools and techniques by using a comprehensive case.
■The text is not only appropriate for classroom use it is an excellent refer- ence source for outside class assignments and that real world systems project.
■ Highlighted throughout the text are short discussions that offer insights and examples of systems analysis and design tools and techniques, relevant comments by systems professionals, and discussions of actual systems. This in our opinion makes some of the material more interesting and em- phasizes the fact that information systems professionals actually use and view these tools as important in conducting their jobs.
■The text is written in a conversational manner that undergraduate students can easily comprehend

It is our belief that the content of this text and its writing style will con- vince you to use it in your next systems analysis and design course.
