This study aims to analyze the borrowing behavior of Indonesians. Specifically, this study evaluates the propensity of indebtedness to buy a new car when the Indonesian government implements the reduction of luxury tax policy (Pajak
Pertambahan atas Barang Mewah, PpnBM) on a new car with specific criteria. The government carried out the policy to restore the automotive industry after experiencing the negative impact of the covid-19 pandemic. This research use
observations through a structured questioner on 123 individual respondents. This study aims to evaluate whether emotions, materialism, and financial planning behavior significantly impact one's propensity to indebtedness to buy a new car. This study provides empirical contribution regarding the behavioral factors that predict a propensity towards indebtedness in Indonesia. We conducted multiple regression analyses in this study. We found that the emotions factor has a significant negative effect on propensity towards indebtedness. Meanwhile, materialism and financial planning behavior have significant positive effects on propensity towards indebtedness. This study is expected to provide an empirical finding regarding the effectiveness of the Indonesian governments' luxury tax reduction policy.
