URBAN ECONOMICS: AN INTRODUCTION

EVANS, ALAN W. - Personal Name;

In this new textbook, the author brings together theoretical analysis and empirical evidence to provide an understanding of the economic forces determining the structure, growth and development of towns and cities.

Urban economics may sometimes be studied for its own sake, but it is also of interest to those concerned with the development and planning of cities and with the solution of their social and economic problems. The text therefore maintains a balanced approach to the development of economic analysis, the aim being throughout to synthesize the material which increases our understanding of the urban economy, and not merely to develop theory for theory's sake.

Thus the book covers not only residential location but also the location of manufacturing and offices; the operation of the urban land and labour markets are dealt with in depth, and there is an analysis of the process of change in the urban economy. Other chapters deal with local government finance, urban transport problems and the impact of town planning on the urban economy. The applicability of urban economic theory to cities in less developed countries is also considered.
