THE PRACTICE OF LABOUR RELATIONS
As we introduce the third edition of this book, we can reflect on the fact that many changes have occurred in the Canadian labour relations scene in the 20 years since the materials were developed for the first edition. One of the most welcome changes is the increase in the amount of literature available on Canadian labour relations. Twenty years ago there were few, if any, Canadian textbooks on labour relations. Today, there are many and much supplemental material on labour law, arbitration, and negotiation.
Despite the addition of many other books on labour relations, we think that this book continues to be unique. Its uniqueness lies in the case studies that make up most of the contents. Someone once said that, in comparison to other methods, using cases to study a field was like the difference between teaching someone to fly and simply giving them an airline ticket.
This book is addressed to managers and managers-to-be who will face union organizing campaigns and will negotiate and administer collective agreements. The case studies allow for the practicing and honing of the management skills of analysis, decision-making, and developing empathy with others' view points. The cases also provide the opportunity for understanding the operation of the labour relations system from the practitioner's viewpoint. The text material is an attempt to provide background information that cannot easily be provided in case studies. We do not pretend that it represents exhaustive coverage of the field. Indeed, that is beyond the scope of this (or perhaps any) book. We hope that it will provide the information necessary for individuals to successfully begin to operate in the field, and provide a basis for further study of what is a fascinating and dynamic subject.
