THE CULTURE OF BUSINESS IN INDONESIA
The purpose of this book is not to whitewash Indonesian society and gloss over its differences from other societies.
The purpose is to try to explain Indonesian society so that foreigners can have a better understanding of it.
At a recent seminar in Jakarta, the Director General for Industrial Relations, Suwarto, said that "a general depiction of Indonesia's customs and cultural values is absolutely necessary for foreign companies employing Indonesian workers in order to avoid conflicts between managers and workers. The interviews at the beginning of the book are truly valuable because they provide fresh insights, based on experience, into three viewpoints:
1) the impressions of foreigners doing business here; 2) the opinions of Javanese and 3) the opinions of non Javanese.
These opinions can be set against the description of perceived traditional culture and behaviour set out as a monograph in the centre of the book.
While not all aspects of traditional culture continue to apply or apply to the same extent as in the past or apply for the same reasons or will continue to apply in the future, nevertheless, the past and tradition is a persistent influence and it is helpful to review social conventions.
Distinctions have been made between Javanese and non Javanese but there is substantial emphasis on the Javanese as the largest ethnic group together with the highlighting of characteristics which are shared by non Javanese.
Finally, there are notes which illustrate how foreigners should try to work within the culture if they wish to be successful in Indonesia
