DEVELOPING AND MANAGING EXPERT SYSTEMS: PROVEN TECHNIQUES FOR BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY

PRERAU, DAVID S. - Personal Name;

This book presents a practical, step-by-step approach to developing and managing expert systems in business and industry. The methods and guidelines provided are based on the author's extensive experience leading the development of expert systems, including one of the largest industrial expert systems ever fielded, COMPASS. For each step in the expert system development process, he describes techniques proven successful in a business environment and practical advice for dealing with the technical and, often overlooked, nontechnical problems that both developers and managers of expert systems will doubtless face themselves.

The book is uniquely organized, interweaving general information with concrete examples. Every section of the book consists of two parts. The first of these parts presents a complete, detailed discussion of the approach, techniques, and recommendations related to a step in expert system development. The second part recounts the author's own experience in actually accomplishing that step when developing COMPASS. Thus, readers will find proven methods and guidelines for successfully developing an expert system, as well as detailed information on the development of a major expert system.

This book covers all the basic concepts and provides a comprehensive description and assessment of each aspect of expert system development: planning and managing a project; selecting the application domain and the domain experts; choosing software and hardware; acquiring, representing, and implementing the expert knowledge; testing and evaluating the system; transferring the technology and deploying the system. Its focus is to provide readers the most practical information needed for developing their own systems.
