GLOBALIZATION: THEORY AND PRACTICE
Globalization is no longer a new phenomenon in the academic world. It has become part of the established conceptual vocabulary for addressing social relations on a global scale. The hype has been put on one side and it has been recognized that it is time to start moving away from its generalizing tenden- cies to the specificities of what globalization actually means when used in particular contexts for declared and undeclared purposes.
This volume represents the second wave, as it were, of globalization studies. These are characterized by a dissatisfaction with the current state of global play, both theoretical and practical. They reject the universalizing characteristics of much of the discussion about globalization. They are circumspect about its euphoric nature and question the problematics of its roots in particular traditions of thought and structures of power. Contribu- tions to this volume signal the range of critical issues which need to be addressed in relation to the theory and practice of globalization. In varied ways they demonstrate that interconnections between theory and practice have distinctive importance when thinking about globalization and its differential impacts upon those involved in its processes.
