CONTROVERSY IN APPLIED ECONOMICS
The central objective of this book is to provide a treatment of applied economics which explicitly approaches the field as contested terrain. It investigates the sources and nature of controversy within areas of applied economics in the context of the UK economy. This is a challenging prospect. Few, if any, other textbooks deal with controversy in applied economics in this direct fashion. All too often the tendency is to examine issues as if economics constituted a central, agreed body of thought, rather than a loose collection of competing perspectives.
The book adopts a systematic approach to understanding the nature of controversy. Chapter 1 establishes the 'core' themes and Chapters 2-12 then explore different areas of applied economics in the light of these insights. Finally, Chapter 13 draws some lessons for the future of economic science. The book is designed to meet the requirements of undergraduate students taking intermediate courses in economics, social sciences and business and will also provide useful supporting reading for students on a range of other courses
