THE GLOBAL INVESTOR: OPPORTUNITIES, RISKS AND REALITIES FOR INVESTORS IN THE WORLD`S MARKETS

DOBSON, GAVIN R. - Personal Name;

This book deals specifically with international equity investment, but before getting into the subject in detail, I would like to explore the roots from which international investment has grown over the years.

The word investment literally means 'to lay out money with the expecta- tion of profiƄ, and as defined, international investment must be one of the oldest professions.

For thousands of years, international investing has been practised by the nation state in many parts of the world for military, commercial and social reasons. It has been practised by entrepreneurs, merchants and corporations for as long as trade and commerce have flourished. Historically, equity in- vestment is a new phenomenon, but its roots are deep in the soil of global commerce, which has been around for a very long time.
