INDONESIAN BANKING CRISIS: THE ANATOMY OF CRISIS AND BANK RESTRUCTURING
Economic growth of a country is greatly determined by the viability of its banking system. High economic growth is facilitated/supported by a strong and healthy banking system, since it has a major role as a main source of financing economic engine.
Hence, it is critical to create and maintain a viable banking system. The banking system must foster prudential banking principle, good governance practice and effective banking supervision and monitoring. Without such management, the banking system has great potential for generating/facilitating unhealthy banking practices, abuse of power, and the swelling Non Performing Loans initiated by moral hazard actions, and consequently can jeopardize and devastate the banking system.
The Indonesian banking crisis serves as an example of the consequences of unhealthy banking practices forcing the Indonesian government to incur costly bank restructuring program that must be borne by the public.
The bank restructuring program is carried out to manage the crisis with the aim to maintain/regain public confidence toward the banking system, improve the capital structure of the banks, create new regulations and laws promoting a healthy and strong banking system.
How is the anatomy of crisis and bank restructuring illustrated? What lessons can be learned from the banking crisis, including IMF involvement in economic recovery program, especially in Indonesia. I Putu Gede Ary Suta and Soebowo Musa have thoroughly scrutinize such issues in this book.
This book offers comprehensive illustration and assessment on the banking crisis with the expectation that it can become a source of analysis for bankers, academician, central bankers, and the government in establishing better future banking system. Therefore, the banking system can become one of the engine growth for a sustainable and competitive economic environment.
