Hinery is history thus the present generation, and especially for subsequent generations whe will live in a different and changed world, mat learn from the history of their own nation's struggle which was imbued with heroism, patriotism, self denial, and failures and treason that should not be repeated. For that purpose and with regard to of Indonesia, this book is inued. the anniversary of the 50 sh Independence of the Republic

To prevent mistakes as far as is posible (although it is still imposible to be perfect), a number of experts on bistery were asked by the initiaters to compile the text and the pictures.

To provide photography as a visual representation of historical events is not an eary task. The Editorial Team sruttinized reliable sources like IPPHOS, the National Archives, Gedung Joang 45. Deppen, Documentation Center of the Armed Forces, the National Library, all governmental departments, and a number of libraries belonging to the media, even in the Netherlands like the Netherlandsche Fotoarchief and the Netherlands State Institute for War Documentation and De. Elisabeth Locher- Schouten. Heaving collected thousands of photographs (originals and copies) does not mean that it has been eary to arrange them in the limited space of the book. The selection and categorization of the fotographs took time, energy and thought.

To provide visual information through meaningful photographs that highlight the success of national development during the New Order, highly artistic photograpin were needed and were provided by the creative photography of Mr. Rizal Pahlevi, Beawibarta, and Ed Zulverdi.

"50 Years Independence of Indonesia" is published as a feeling of gratitude to the blessings of the Great God Almighty who provided Indonesia with the blessings of freedom after hundreds of years of conflict and material and human losses.

The book comprises two volumes: the events of 1945-1965 and 1965-1995. The titles, photographs and pictures inspiring feelings and spirit of struggle, invite us to recontemplate the failures and successes in the determined effort to uphold, construct and fill our freedom.
