FREE MARKET ECONOMICS

SCHOTTER, ANDREW - Personal Name;

The second addition of this book differs from the first by the addition of a new chapter on experimental economics. As stated in the n chapter 6, there has been a recent explosion of interest within the economics profession, in the area of experimental economics. Exper imental economists run controlled laboratory experiments in an effort to discover the properties of economic institutions and theories. While the aim of experimental economics is not to test the properties of the free market argument, if one is selective one can find a number of articles that directly or indirectly shed some light on the descriptive validity of the assumptions that form the foundation of the argument. In chapter 6 I present a number of articles that question some of the assumptions that are dear to the heart of many free marketeers. From these articles I think we can gain a healthy skepticism which, I hope, will allow us to be more objective in evaluating the benefits of free market solutions to our social problems.
